FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING 2E STUDENTS
What is the age range in children/teens that you tutor?
I work with elementary age students, middle school students and high school students who range in age from 6-16.
What subject areas do you tutor in?
I work with students in the following aspects of Literacy development: Reading (Decoding, Fluency, Comprehension); Writing (Composition, Editing, Grammar, Sentence Structure, Syntax); Spelling; and Study Skills.
What is a typical lesson with a student?
Lessons are tailored for an individual student depending on his/her academic needs. The structure of each lesson is divided into areas of Content (what concepts and big ideas are worth learning about) Process (how does your student learn to make sense of the content) and Product (what can he/she do with the new understandings he/she has mastered).
How often would my child need to work with you?
One-hour tutoring sessions are recommended at least 1x-2x per week depending on the nature and scope of the child’s learning needs.
Do you do testing?
No, I do not administer formal assessments. I refer students’ families to licensed, clinical psychologists who do Educational-Psychological Evaluations.
Do you offer counseling?
No, I do not counsel students or families. I offer information about support groups and recommend resources to address the social-emotional needs of students and their parents.
Why is my child/teen struggling in school when he/she is so smart?
When a child has an uneven or asynchronnous development, it can result in underachievement, frustration, and low grades in school. The discrepancies evidenced in a student’s learning profile can indicate patterns of a Twice-Exceptional learner.
What does it mean if my child is 2e?
The term Twice-Exceptional is used to describe the student who is very advanced intellectually in one or more academic areas, or talented in the creative arts realm — while at the same time — the child is below grade level or chronological development in other areas of cognitive processing. 2e learners show exceptionality in two or more areas.
What are the traits of 2e learners?
The traits of 2e learners vary with each individual child. There are common traits to Gifted learners; some of these characteristics are present in some advanced or high ability learners.
